Low Testosterone and COVID-19: Are you at risk?

June 8, 2020

Studies show the majority of male patients with COVID-19 have low testosterone - with potentially deadly consequences.

Testosterone has been named "a key hormone in the context of COVID-19 pandemic" by The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the United States National Library of Medicine.

study conducted by the Department of Intensive Care Medicine in Hamburg Germany: "The majority of male patients with COVID-19 present low testosterone."

MEN HAVE A MUCH HIGHER FATALITY RATE.

42% of COVID-19 patients are women and 58% are male (the numbers are even higher for ages 60-79 with 66% of COVID-19 patients being male). Men are more than twice as likely to die of COVID-19 (caused by the virus SARS-CoV2) than women.

The NCBI study reports the following fatality rates for COVID-19:

  • 30-39 years, 82.4% are male

  • 40-49 years, 73.1% are male

  • 50-59 years, 78.5% are male

  • 60-69 years, 79.7% are male

  • 70-79 years, 79.6% are male

While comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension (which also lead to lower testosterone levels in men) have been listed as additional risk factors for the severity of sickness, this recent NCBI study has found substantial evidence that low testosterone may drastically increase the fatality rate of male COVID-19 patients.

THE EFFECTS OF LOW TESTOSTERONE ON COVID-19 PATIENTS.

These studies concluded that many critical patients with COVID-19 suffered from low testosterone. The effect of low testosterone in these patients is elevated inflammation caused by proinflammatory cytokines. Cytokines are small secreted proteins released by cells that respond to injury or infection. However, in men with low testosterone, studies have reported they are more likely to suffer from a "cytokine storm" - which means these proinflammatory cytokines have an overactive response, actually damaging the immune system and causing an aggressive progression of COVID-19 infection. This has proved deadly in many male patients. The NCBI study showed that COVID-19 patients who were given testosterone therapy reported "an improvement in peak oxygen consumption." Even at that stage, beginning testosterone therapy helped ease the progression of infection.

BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY FOR PREVENTATIVE HEALTH.

These studies prove how incredibly important it is for men and women to do hormone replacement for optimal health. Not only is testosterone a vital hormone in both men and women, it is imperative for a healthy immune system and overall health. The program at Southwest Age Intervention Institute focuses on the myriad of health benefits of hormone replacement. When monitored and tailored specifically to YOU, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can not only help your immune system during this COVID-19 pandemic, it can also help prevent and/or reverse diabetes, obesity, heart disease, hypertension, silent inflammation, and age related diseases such as Alzheimer's.

There are even more benefits to hormone replacement at SAII:
